The management of information has long been regarded as the domain of librarians and libraries. Librarians and information professionals are trained to be experts in organizing, searching, preserving and disseminating information. The Internet has changed the way of accessing information and communicating fundamentally.
If libraries in the 21st century want to be knowledge and learning centers they will have to adapt to the way their users are handling information and communication channels. A first challenge is the fact that there is more information available outside the library than on the shelves. A second challenge is that users look for their own information and communication channels: Google, Google Scholar, Facebook, Research Gate, Mendeley, LinkedIn, etc.. A third challenge and opportunity follows from the policies of universities and research organizations to set up systems to manage their research output in an open context: Open Access, Open Data, Open Science.
Librarians have essential knowledge to address these challenges. But a modern information manager needs to understand the complexity of the information society. Up to a certain level he also needs to have an information technology background.
The workshop will focus on the different aspects of modern information management. It will discuss the challenges and practical solutions.
